Most USB compact flash drives are formatted using the older FAT32 file system. This system is used as it better facilitates the simplistic hardware used in relatively small solid state digital media devices. While one can reformat the entire USB flash drive or a partition in it with the NTFS file system it should be noted that changing the file system of a partition reformats that drive and consequently deletes all files. This creates a difficult data recovery scenario.

Still as long as one does not overwrite the flash drive with new content prior to scanning that drive with a quality data recovery tool it is still possible to recover formatted partition information.
